Bringing Home the Big Ones

A little photo essay of our grand spring of 2006 adventure.

Back in 2004 we began working with Rycsyk Quarry on Savage Mountain in Garrett County Maryland. And we spied some very interesting stones. Big`uns. You see, most quarry's simply do not produce the kind of large slab stone that we want for the Stone Circle, so we really do have to hunt around to find rock that we think really wants to live in the Circle. Usually, our friends weigh in at 5-6 thousand pounds, and up to 14 feet high. But sometimes quite a bit smaller.

In 2004 we arrived at the quarry with a 45 foot flatbed tractor trailer equipped with a 12,000 pound self-loading crane; but the stone we really wanted would not budge. My, it was a big`un. So we spent the winter thinking on it.

The plan was simple, arrive with two trucks, a flat bed AND a crane truck.
Simple and expensive.

It was a bit ticklish getting the largest stone up in the air and then onto our flatbed truck. The crane was rated to 15,000 pounds and we took it right into overload with the lift, any larger and we would not have made it. The opinion of our quarrymen and our operators is that this stone tips the scales at a bit over 14,000 pounds. More than twice as large as any other stone we have worked with.

When we arrived home we had more work in front of us, as the 45 foot flat bed was simply not going to make it into the camp. We off loaded back onto the crane truck for the last quarter mile into camp.

And finally, placed into a nice shady spot in front of the Coffee Dragons, a good place for us to get to know this new member of the family.

These pictures are of the largest of three very large stones that we brought back. We think these stones would seem out of place within the Stone Circle, so we plan on letting them sit for a spell, while they get used to the Land and we get acquainted with them. In the meantime, we have to develop the equipment and techniques that will allow us to move them and stand them upright. So stay tuned, attend Stones Rising and we will keep you posted on developments!
