Chants and Songs
for the
Sacred Fire Circle

redline2.gif (922 bytes)

We have planted the seed and raised the crop.
The fires have burned and surged; our persons transformed.
Embracing the Gift and with winter nigh;
Now is the time to bank the fire, to pull from its glowing bed
those last bright burning Embers
and make of them a Gift to our Tribe,
The Age Old Promise of Return.
With which to build the Fires yet again.

First Night: the Past

Invocation
Abbi Spinner and Stonesinger Chorus

Sing through my voice
Play through my hands Let the way be open!
Sing through my voice
Play through my hands Let the way be open!
Sing through my voice
Play through my hands Let the way be open!

I sing for the Stones
I sing for the Land
I sing for the Stones
I sing for the Land
I sing for the Stones
I sing for the Land Let the way be open!

Sweet Surrender

We are opening up in sweet surrender
to the luminous love light from the moon
We are opening up in sweet surrender
to the luminous love light from within
We are opening, we are opening
We are opening, we are opening

We Dance
traditional

Under the full moonlight, we dance!
Spirits dance, we dance!
Joining hands, we dance!
Joining souls, rejoice!

We all come from the Goddess
We all come from the Goddess
And to her we shall return
Like a drop of rain
Flowing to the ocean

Ancient Mother

Ancient Mother, I hear you calling,
Ancient Mother, I sing your song,
Ancient Mother, I join your laughter,
Ancient Mother, I dry your tears.

Spiraling Into the Center
Shekhinah Mountainwater

Spiraling into the center
The center of our soul
Spiraling into the center
The center of our soul
We are the weavers, we are the woven ones
We are the dreamers, we are the dream
We are the weavers, we are the woven ones
We are the dreamers, we are the dream

In the Spirit of the Earth
Deirdre Pulgram Arthen

In the spirit of the earth we are coming together
In the spirit of the earth we are one
In the spirit of the earth we are singing and dancing
In the spirit of the earth we are one
Hear our voices soaring high
reaching for the sky
Feel our footsteps, even and strong
They will echo through the night

Ancient and Strong
Phoenix

Ancestors calling to me
Power ancient and strong
Elders, sage, and wise ones be
We have known you all along

Behold there is Magic all Around You
Abbi Spinner and Magnus McBride

Behold, There is Magic All Around You
Behold, there is magic all around you (3 times)
Awaken, rejoice, and sing!
(after every verse)

1. I am the Air around you,
I am the breath of life within you,
I am the wind blowing through you,
I am all that I am.
2. I am the Fire around you,
I am the spark of life within you,
I am the flame shining through you,
I am all that I am.
3. I am the Water around you,
I am the pulse of life within you,
I am the ocean flowing through you,
I am all that I am.
4. I am the Earth around you,
I am the heart of life within you,
I am ancestors living through you,
I am all that I am.

The River is Flowing

The river is flowing
flowing and growing
The river is flowing
down to the sea
Mother, carry me
Your child I will always be
Mother, carry me
down to the sea

With Every Step

With every step I take I walk in balance
With every step I take I breathe in life
With every step I take I walk my path
With every step I give my song of thanks.

It's the Blood of the Ancients

It's the blood of the ancients
That runs through our veins
And the forms pass
But the circle of life remains.

Spirit of the Wind

Spirit of the Wind carry me
Spirit of the Wind carry me home
Spirit of the Wind carry me home to myself

Spirit of the Sun warm me
Spirit of the Sun warm me through
Spirit of the Sun warm me through to myself

Spirit of the Rain wash me
Spirit of the Rain wash me clean
Spirit of the Rain wash me clean to myself

Spirit of the Trees walk with me
Spirit of the Trees walk me home
Spirit of the Trees walk me home to myself

Hoof and Horn

Hoof and horn, hoof and horn
All that dies shall be reborn
Corn and grain, corn and grain
All that falls shall rise again.

Earth My Body

Earth my body, water my blood
Air my breath and fire my spirit.

Listen to the Voices
Holly Near

Listen to the voices of our ancestors
Listen to the voices of our ancestors.
Calling out the messages between space and time.
Telling us what we need to know in order to survive.
Listen to the voices of our ancestors.
Listen to the voices of our ancestors.

CRONESONG (chanted in 6/8)
Aisling

The Earth is the Goddess,
the grass is Her hair,
Hail, Crone, Blossom and Bone!
We dance on Her shoulders
and work in Her hand
For the land, all for the land

GATHER 'ROUND
Griffin

Gather ‘round the sacred stone
Hand in hand, no more alone.
For we’ve heard the old one’s call
Of one family are we all.

Gather ‘round the sacred fire
Hand in hand, we are inspired.
To listen to the old one’s call
And be one family gathered all

Second Night: the Future

At the Center of Four Quarters
12/25/97 by Kailin StoneSinger,
Stephen Costanzo, Derek Johnson

Trees that grow layered up the mountainside
stand clear and bright against the sky
There’s a bite in the wind as the evening falls,
drifting softly down the farmhouse walls

Springtime the pilgrims will come back to the land,
bringing strength of numbers to what Landskeeper began
and we’ll all stand together and we’ll raise another Stone
to the seventh generation and the children yet unknown.

My feet may yet be wandering, but my heart has found a home
at the center of Four Quarters in a ring of Standing Stone. (2x)

Come and stand with us beneath the moon
in the Circle on the hill
Become the babe passed through the Stone;
let your family welcome you home

This is space where you are sacred,
this is space where you are free,
This is space where you can walk the Path
to what you’re meant to be

Where our differences don’t matter;
in this space we’re all the same
For the Stones are casting Circle
and they’re calling out our names.

My feet may yet be wandering, but my heart has found a home
at the center of Four Quarters in a ring of Standing Stone. (2x)

Time will come to lay my body down
with the barrowed ancestors.
Let the rooks and the raptors pick my bones
and let my skull look out upon the Stones.

Honor the old ways, for it’s they have brought us here;
Listen to the wisdom that is whispered in your ear:
There is more to being family than breath and blood alone
We are all one tribe together in a ring of Standing Stone!

My feet may yet be wandering, but my heart has found a home
at the center of Four Quarters in a ring of Standing Stone. (5x)

She Changes

There is a woman who weaves the night sky
See her spin, watch her fingers fly
She is within us, beginning to end
Our grandmother, our sister, our friend
She is the weaver, and we are the web
She is the needle, an we are the thread
She changes everything she touches and
Everything she touches changes
She changes everything she touches and
Everything she touches changes

We are a Circle

We are a Circle
Within a Circle
With no beginning
And never ending.

Fire, Transform Me

Fire, transform me
Bring me to my passion
Fire, transform me
Bring me to my passion
I choose life (Yes!)
I choose courage
I choose life (Yes!)
I choose courage
to dance among the flames
to dance among the flames

May the Circle Be Unbroken
Melody traditional; new words by Pamela Alexander

We were standing in the Circle
On a wet and rainy day
When we saw the Stones come rollin’
And the dancers led the way

Chorus:
May the Circle be unbroken by and by, oh, by and by
As we gather on the hilltop and we cry oh how we cry

Some were running with the rollers
Others straining on the ropes
And the children came in dancing
Shoulders bearing all our hopes

Chorus

And I saw clear for a moment
All the ones who came before
As they built up their Stone Circles
On an old and distant shore

Chorus

And the promises we’ve made here
And the friends we’ve toiled beside
All are gathered in the Circle
Where the air is sanctified

Chorus

And I saw clear for a moment
All the ones who’re not yet born
As they finish our Stone Circle
On a clear and distant morn

Chorus (2x)

Elements Round (I Am Rooted)
verse 1 traditional
verses 2 & 3 Laughing Starheart

1. I am rooted, I am growing,
I am welling, I am flowing
I am bending, I am blowing,
I am lightning, I am glowing.
2. I am Spirit wearing skin,
I am Spirit deep within
I am Spirit, dancing bones,
I am Spirit, Standing Stone
3. I’m protected all this day,
I feel love now and always
I have all my needs provided,
I feel all my lives united.

Pagan Medley

1. With every step I take, I walk in balance
With every breath I take, I breathe in life
With every step I take, I walk my prayer
With every breath, I give my song of thanks
2. We are a Circle within a Circle
with no beginning and never ending
3. Earth my body, Water my Blood,
Air my Breath and Fire my Spirit
4. We are one with the infinite Sun
forever and ever and ever

Chorus from “Circle”
Harry Chapin

All my life's a circle;
Sunrise and sundown;
Moon rolls thru the nighttime;
Till the daybreak comes around.
All my life's a circle;
But I can't tell you why;
Season's spinning round again;
The years keep rollin' by.

Water, Fire, and Smoke
Betsy Rose

It's been a long journey to come to this place
I've traveled in time and I’ve traveled in space
I've traveled in circles and come face to face
With the water, fire, and smoke

I've pondered and worried, I’ve tightened the ropes
Feasted on sorrow and starved out my hopes
Now I come like a lover, my heart in my throat
Give me water, fire, and smoke

Water for cleansing my eyes and my ears
Fire the transformer of sorrows and fears
Smoke for my ancestors, drawing them near
With the water, fire, and smoke

Far from the churchyard, the word and the cross
Deep in the forest, by the rivers and the rocks
You will find a green altar deep in the moss
You'll find water, fire, and smoke

Ancient the spirits of rocks, trees, and wind
Ancient the rites of the green sacrament
Long before judgement, atonement, and sin
There was water, fire, and smoke

I've laid down my burdens, the weight of my years
Gods I have worshipped and causes held dear
But who will I be when they all disappear
Into water, fire, and smoke?

I've knelt in the ashes, in peace may I rise
Empty of knowing, and full of surprise
Clothed all in silence, a baby baptized
In the water, fire, and smoke

Far from the churchyard, the word and the cross
Deep in the forest, by the rivers and the rocks
You will find a green altar deep in the moss
You'll find water, fire, and smoke
Chorus from “Gentle Arms of Eden”
Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer

This is my home, this is my only home
This is the only sacred ground that I have ever known
And should I stray in the dark night alone
Rock me Goddess in the gentle arms of Eden

The Moon is My Light
Kailin ni Caorthann

The moon is my light in the darkness of life
She holds me in the palm of her hand
She is my mother, I’ve never known another
She is my light in the darkness of life

Always returning, silver light burning
Leading the seasons around and around
She calls, I answer, piper and dancer
She holds my soul and to her am I bound

I vow to be all that she asks
I seek her way, I follow her path
Goddess my mother, no other is above her
She is my light in the darkness of life

Always returning, silver light burning
Leading the seasons around and around
She calls, I answer, piper and dancer
She holds my soul and to her am I bound
She holds my soul and to her am I bound

I Love the Earth
Daniel Macneal

I love the Earth and I lift my voice to worship Her
Oh, my Soul! Rejoice!
Take joy, Gaia, in what you hear
May it be a sweet, sweet sound in your ear.

Excerpt from “Woman of the Earth”
Adrienne Piggott

Raise the Stones, read the runes
Feel the power, draw down the moon
Rowan, Oak and Hawthorn tree
In the scrying bowl we see
Fire, Water, Earth and Air
This ancient wisdom that we share
Look to the moon and seek to find
Here is the power of all our kind

Come walk the paths that the old ones walked
Come dance the dances they taught us
Come sing the songs that the old ones sang
For the magic now has caught us

Back to the River

Back To The River, Back To The Sea
Back To The Ocean, One With Thee
Back To My Blood, And Back Through My Veins
Back To My Heartbeat, One And The Same
Back To The Forest, Back To The Fields
Back To The Mountains, Her Body Revealed
Back To My Bones, Back To My Skin
Back To My Spirit, The Fire Within
Back To The Land, Back To The Tribe
Back to the Stones, Standing Side by Side

Unity Trance

1. Come and be one, become one, be one, be

2. Celebrate diversity, infinite in harmony
Rainbow colors all entwined, many bodies, one mind

Merry Part

The circle is open, but unbroken
May the peace of the Gods go ever in your heart
Merry Meet, and Merry Part
And Merry Meet again.

Until We Meet Again
Barrage

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the sun shine warm upon your face now
May the rains fall soft upon your fields

And until we meet again
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand
May God hold you in the palm of his hand

May our children and their descendants
Be the ones to find a lasting peace
May their hopes and dreams become united
May the past be left for those who hate

And until we meet again
And until we meet again
May love and trust find a way to make a stand
May love and trust find a way to make a stand

May this world and all its wonders
Be a home to all humanity
May the people find a common purpose
May we help one another to survive

And until we meet again
And until we meet again
May Mother Earth pour her heart into our land
May Mother Earth pour her heart into our land

Personal responcibility can be a burden,
it is so much easier to watch and be entertained.
But for a moment, perhaps we can put the fear aside and trust,
hand in hand, and there stand togeather in The Center of The Circle.

* Embers assumes some prior experience in one of the many flavors of Magic Fire Circle; or a dedication to ritual and ceremonial workings. You should be prepared to take responsibility for creating and offering your own contributions to Fire Circle and your Tribe. And to be open and listening; making space for the sonic and spiritual contributions of others. If you have questions, please do call Four Quarters.
*  Embers is the fourth major Four Quarters event that is being completely planned and developed by our Members Planning Groups. As a Member, Please join us in this process on The Embers Members Planning Section of the Four Quarters Forum.
If not a member, you can still particapate through The Embers Public Forum.

    Come, don't be a stranger.
Join us as we stand togeather
In the Center of The Circle!
